Rev3 Knoxville Triathlon

This past weekend (May 6) I was in Knoxville to run the 10k portion of the Rev3 Knoxville Triathlon.  What a crazy weekend but so much fun (minus the really hot run!).  This race has been 3 years in the making.  My Mom ran the inaugural Rev3 Knoxville Tri and while my dad and brother watched, they decided to do it as well.  They both did the Olympic and Mom, my friend Matt, and I did the Olympic relay.  Mom did the swim, Matt did the bike and I did the run.  My brother and our friend Rachel raced as well.

I don’t have too many pictures of Friday or Saturday but my camera was in full force on Race Day!

We got up early but since Mom and I didn’t have to get transitions ready we took our time.  We made sure to apply our race tattoos.  Normally, triathlons use sharpies but this race does temporary tattoos.  Good in theory but the tattoos ended up sticky and took my 4 days to get off!

Rev3 TriathlonSee how shiny it is?  My shirt kept sticking to the tattoo.

We stayed at the official hotel and got to check out progress at the finish line on Sunday morning as we looked out the windows by the elevator (we could NOT take stairs.  Who thought that was a good idea???).  It was neat to see the hustle and bustle of the race taking shape.

On the way to the swim start we passed the Sun Sphere.  That was my goal on the way back in.  As soon as I could see that I knew I was close to the finish!

Rev3 Triathlon

We caught up with Dad and Chris (brother).  I dropped Mom off and took her shoes back to transition.

Rev3 Triathlon

Once back at transition to drop off Mom’s shoes, I met up with Matt who was ready and waiting at the bike.

Rev3 TriathlonAll my pictures in the parking garage transition were terrible.  The lighting made everything really bad!

I then headed to the Lady Vols boathouse which was the exit of the swim.  I wanted to make sure I caught everyone!

Rev3 Triathlon

Chris was first out of the water and looked pretty good!

Rev3 TriathlonNext up was Rachel.  She was booking it!

Rev3 TriathlonRev3 TriathlonMom was all smiles!

Once Mom was out, I ran to the transition to get in place.  Matt had already taken off but I spoke with Mom for a while before she went to go take a shower.  Then it was time to wait.  I wasn’t sure when Matt took off or how long he would take so I was pretty clueless of when he would come back.  I ate some granola bars with peanut butter, stretched and twidled my thumbs.  Not much else to do when you have no clue people are coming.

Rev3 Tri

But it was awesome to see everyone come in! I saw Rachel and then as I was taking a last trip to the porta potties, I saw Dad!

Rev3 TriHe told me Matt was behind him but I had time so I booked it to get all the nerves out and raced back to see Matt come in.

Rev3 TriDad was still in transition so he stopped us for a picture.

Rev3 Tri

Dad and I took off for the run.  In the orientation, they said there would be lots of shade.  Unfortunately it was not very shaded by the time we got there.  We ran along the main road for about a mile before turning onto what appeared to be a walking trail.

Rev3 Tri

Rev3 Tri

It was beautiful but didn’t provide nearly enough shade.  Soon, I saw Rachel.  She looked strong and appeared to be first in her division.

Rev3 Tri

I ended up seeing Dad again because it was an out and back.  I was really struggling with the heat and just exhaustion.  By that point I was just so tired.  I don’t do late starts very well.  Boo!  I was very happy to make the turn around and head back to transition.  I was so happy to see Chris running as I got closer to the main road.

Rev3 Tri

Once I saw Chris I went back to the main road.

Rev3 Tri

This part was brutal!  There was no shade and it was beyond hot.  It seemed like it went on forever.  Soon enough, we passed the transition area and the half triathlon racers were just heading out for their 13.1 run.  I was not envious of them.  It was too hot to have another several hours worth of running!

Rev3 TriBy this point I had been squirting water all over my arms to keep myself cool.

Rev3 TriThe official water of the race came in these little baggies.  You bite a corner and then squirt.  I didn’t think they tasted all that great but they sure made carrying water much easier!

Soon enough I saw the rest of my team and they joined me running though the finish.

Rev3 Tri

Check out Matt looking for Trent so he could see us race!

Rev3 TriI’m not so sure I’ve ever been happier to see the finish line!

Rev3 Tri

Before the race we took a picture as a team and they displayed it as we crossed the finish line.

Rev3 Tri

Check out Team Tri Harder!  Dad thought it was a funny name but we did not necessarily agree!

After we finished, we booked it back to see my brother finish.

Dad ended up getting us a late check out so we had plenty of time to see the awards ceremony.  We were pretty sure Rachel had won her age division.

Rev3 Tri

And she did!  Now she is hopefully closer to her goal of becoming a pro!

Once we all were cleaned up, we booked it back home.  Too bad our car got stuck for 1.5 behind a very bad accident.  I’m hoping everyone is ok.

It was a great weekend!  I’ll have my thoughts on the race in a later post.

Have you ever done a Rev3 Triathlon?

2012 Derby miniMarathon

Saturday was my 5th Derby miniMarathon.  I stayed with Mom and Dad so I didn’t have to worry about transportation in the morning.  The hubby and his parents were coming out to watch but since my car had died, staying with my parents would be the easiest.

I signed up earlier in the week to run on the Qdoba team.  Mainly because I got 4 free entrees for running and a free shirt to wear on Saturday.  The front said Qdoba and the back said:

Qdoba Run Team

We weren’t thrilled with the back but I’m not going to complain about a free shirt.  My Mom, Dad and I were all supposed to wear the shirts but Dad’s didn’t fit so he wore my Mom’s instead.

We headed to the start and found a good parking spot and then went to find porta potties.  Dad took off and luckily once the gun went off we were able to jump right in.

Derby miniMarathon

We weren’t too far back which was perfect.

Derby miniMarathon

With my new GPS watch, I could tell that I took off too fast.  I was fluctuating around a 9 min/mile which is far too fast for me.  Thanks to my watch, I was able to hold myself back to a 9:50 pace.  Still a little too fast for me but much better than a 9:00 pace!

I always love this overpass.  So inspiring.  Too bad it is right at the beginning of the race.  I could definitely use this more towards mile 9.

Derby miniMarathon

After running from downtown, we headed through UofL towards Churchill Downs.

Derby miniMarathon

Mile 8 is really what this race is about.  The Kentucky Derby is the “Most Exciting 2 Minutes in Sports”.  The Derby is this upcoming Saturday.  We always run the mini the week before and the coolest part is going in and seeing the horses training.  There is nothing like it!

Derby miniMarathonHeading in…

Derby miniMarathonThe infamous Twin Spires!!!

I wasn’t feeling awesome…just super tired but I knew the hubby and his parents were right outside of Churchill Downs.  So I put a smile on my face and raced to them.

Derby miniMarathon(Once again, why is my hat crooked?)

I don’t have a pic of the hubby and the hubby has a picture of my eye as I leaned in to try and kiss him.  It’s always great to see people you know cheering you on during a race.

Shortly after seeing the hubby, I turned left.  This is very important.  The marathon turns right.  I am always so relieved to turn left instead of right!

Derby miniMarathon

Recognize that hill?  That is the hill that you run at mile 9 of the Papa John’s 10 Miler.  So happy not to be running that either!

Running back through UofL, I found a whole bunch of boxes that held little bottles of water.

Derby miniMarathon

Derby miniMarathon

I’m not sure what happened this year as opposed to previous years, but there were 2-3 water stops that didn’t have water.  I was so thankful for that water.  It meant I could drink whenever I needed it and didn’t have to stop at water stops that may or may not have water.  I did stop when I saw Powerade though.  I do love me some blue powerade.

Running back from Churchill Downs can be pretty boring.  There really isn’t much interesting to look at and it is a complete straight line.  So when these guys passed me, it brought a huge smile to my face!  Great way to break up the race!

Derby miniMarathonSpartans!  Hard to believe they ran the whole race like that!

This was probably the hardest part of the race.  I just couldn’t motivate myself to run from mile 9-11.  I was running some but just didn’t have the energy.  I was trying to take my chomps but they didn’t seem to help.  The beauty of my GPS watch is it allowed me to try and push myself to be faster.  My pace was continually getting slower but knowing that I was at least pushing as hard as I could when I ran was really nice.  I think my time could have been much worse without it!

We finally turned onto Main Street and headed towards our final turn.  Once you make that turn, it is downhill to the finish line!

Derby miniMarathon

Now here is where the day could have gone really badly.  I finished with plenty of time to get through the chute and get around to try and see Mom finish.  She had told me her planned finish time so we had a place to meet but I was convinced I was in place early enough to see her.  Our meetup time came and went and I still didn’t see her finish.  I didn’t want to leave for fear I wouldn’t get to see her finish.  Finally, 30 minutes after our original meetup time, the hubby told me she had finished 2 minutes after me.  I bolted to our meetup spot and started to panic when I didn’t see her.  I had totally messed up our plan.  Thankfully, I saw her waving at me and we were able to find each other.

We had originally planned to grab some breakfast while we waited for Dad but my confusion had messed everything up.  We went back to the car to grab a jacket, put compression socks on and drop off some of our gear then headed to McDonald’s for some fruit.  We had less than an hour and they weren’t serving breakfast anymore.  That was the only thing that sounded good.

We headed back to see Dad finish the marathon.  We had been tracking his progress and were getting somewhat frequent text messages.

Derby miniMarathonLook at him coming around the corner!

Derby miniMarathonComing in strong!

Derby miniMarathonSo proud of him!

We then grabbed some Jimmy John’s and headed home.  Beginning of a long day.

Derby miniMarathonSee you next year Derby mini!
